Having tried both, cocaine is **way** more fun.

Both can leave you with anxiety and that horrible can't sleep but want to feeling once the rewarding part ends but I've never looked back on using Twitter and thought: sure, I feel bad now but totally worth it for the experience.

Substack Notes is less crazy than Twitter but it also has many of the same dynamics. I love the Substack app as it frees up my inbox but it’s addictive in its own way.

I recently read Zvi’s guide to Twitter. https://thezvi.substack.com/p/how-to-best-use-twitter It encouraged people to use Twitter properly by essentially rejecting the algorithm and making your Twitter experience yourself.

I haven’t yet done this. I rarely use Twitter and never tweet. But I plan to follow Zvi’s advice. AFAICT, Twitter is the place where people share cool things and news they care about, so giving it up (or not using it, as I currently am) has some downsides I’m not sure you can substitute easily.

Excellent piece. I started using Twitter a lot when I had Long COVID during the later half of 2022. I have gotten a lot of value from Twitter, especially when it comes to making social connections, but it must be used carefully.

One of my resolutions for 2024 is to use Twitter much less and spend more time reading books and Substack articles. I need to rebuild my ability to focus.
