I held out some hope that Elon and the tech right could have approximated the adults in the room this time around, but clearly for various reasons they aren't up to it. We simply won't make it four years if this continues. He will need to either bring back some of the old guard, or he will need to be removed from office. This is a disaster.

Jeb was certainly right and it is probably reasonable to expect the remainder of Trump 2.0 to be as much of a shitshow as the last few months. However, it is probably irrational to expect the GOP to shift away from MAGA, given that the base and the leaders are extremely dug in, and that it is unclear what if any line Trump would cross that would alienate them. I generally think it is much more important for liberals to figure out their strategy going into the midterms and 2028 than to reminisce about the former sanity of the GOP. Unless there's a recession, I think things still aren't looking as good for Dems as they should, and it seems that Dems are set up to face similar problems in 2028 that they did in 2024.

"Man, what happened to the kind of Republicans I would respect!" - guy who would have voted Gore in 2000, Kerry in 2004, Obama in 2008 and 2012

But one can respect someone and not vote for them. Also, I will happily admit: Bush was a good president because of PEPFAR.

Spicy take! A substantive post about this opinion would definitely drive some, er, engagement.

What's your point? Gore and Kerry lost, and Hillary was a losing candidate, so it doesn't seem like there are reasons to think that it was necessary for the GOP to go insane to survive.

The point is, the support of a guy who would never vote for them is worthless.

Notice the concept at stake changed between your first and second comment? First it was respect, now it is support.

My first comment mentioned voting.

Doesn't change the fact that his point was about respect, not support. So you're not really disagreeing

if any conservatives can be persuaded to abandon ship, it won't be out of self interest but out of their disdain for MAGA. But that didn't seem to be the point of this article anyway

If you humor everyone who shows up on your doorstep yelling about how you’re morally obligated to save a ton of money on car insurance, you’ll never get anything done.
