You have no idea what its like to be a salmon. Your perceptions of pleasure, pain, and happiness arose from instrumental signals for evolutionary success, there is no reason to believe that members of species with a wildly different history must share your experience. In fact what we do see is that wild animals held in captivity are often depressed and reluctant to breed even though they’ve been relieved of predation, hunger and disease. Not everything in the world must agree that a good life is living in some kind of hedonic zoo.

“Animals value being alive” also just isn’t true imo; this is anthropomorphic projection. Simple animals don’t understand abstract concepts like life and death, they’re motivated by simple drives like pain and pleasure, which cause them to behave roughly as if they value being alive / are afraid of death. As an analogy, when nonhuman animals have sex, they’re obviously doing it for the pleasure of sex and not because they want to have offspring per se. They’re afraid of dying, not death.
